WELLESLEY Blanks UMass-Dartmouth, 3-0
NORTH
DARTMOUTH, MA- Wellesley Soccer took a 1-0 halftime lead and
blanked the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s women’s
soccer team, 3-0, in a non-conference match at Cressy Field Tuesday
afternoon. UMass Dartmouth dropped to 0-5-1 with the defeat,
while Wellesley improved to 5-2-0.
Haley Geller (Berkeley, Calif.)
gave the Blue a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute when she sent a shot
past UMass Dartmouth first-year
goalkeeper Elisabeth Stapleton (Wakefield, Mass./Wakefield HS).
Wellesley struck twice in the second frame. Dee
Garrahan (Fairfax,
Va.) took a pass from Alison Carney (Healdsburg,
Calif.) on a corner kick and volleyed the ball into the top right
corner of
the net
in the 60th minute,
and Jennifer Lau (Honolulu, Hawaii) took a long pass from Garrahan
and tallied her fifth goal of the season eight and a half minutes
later to complete the scoring. The Corsairs had a few good chances,
but they were denied by Wellesley goalkeeper Katie Martore (Great
Falls, Va.) who had nine saves in the game.
“We played better in the first half than we did in the second,” said
UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Alex Silva. “We didn’t play
consistently for 90 minutes, which is what you need to do to beat
a good team like Wellesley.”
The Blue out shot UMD, 21-15. Stapleton made 10 stops for the
Corsairs.
Wellesley will return to action on Saturday when the team host
NEWMAC foe Clark University on Saturday afternoon with a start
time slated for 1 p.m.
