Babson Rallies To Beat Wellesley, 2-1, In Overtime

BABSON PARK, Mass. -- Senior tri-captain Caitlin Cronin (Hanover, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal with 2:05 left in the first overtime to lift the Babson College women’s soccer team to a dramatic 2-1 victory over visiting Wellesley College in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest at Hartwell-Rogers Field on Tuesday afternoon. With the win, the Beavers improved to 7-3-3 overall and 2-1-2 in the conference, while Wellesley fell to 7-4-0 overall and 3-2-0 in the NEWMAC.

Babson outshot Wellesley, 9-3, in the first half, but first-year goalkeeper Katie Martore (Great Falls, Va.) made four saves in the period to keep the Beavers off the board. Wellesley then netted the game’s first goal on just their fourth shot, as sophomore Deirdre Garrahan (Fairfax Station, Va.) headed a free kick from senior co-captain Alison Carney (Healdsburg, Calif.) into the lower right corner at 64:10.

The Beavers evened the score at 72:35, as junior Callie Pilling (Dalton, Mass.) hit a cross to sophomore Ingrid Osterholm (Chevy Chase, Md.), who one-timed a pass to junior Nikki Stier (Deerfield, Mass.) on the left side of the box. Stier then lofted a perfect shot past Martore and into the upper right corner, tying the contest at 1-1.

Babson finally put the game away in the closing minutes of the first overtime, as Stier collected a ball in a crowd at the top of the box and slid a pass to Cronin. The Beavers’ senior tri-captain then buried the game-winner in the lower left corner, completing her team’s 2-1 come-from-behind victory.

Martore was outstanding in defeat for Wellesley, making eight saves in net. First-year keeper Sam Scarpato (Weston, Mass.) didn’t make an official save but did make several key plays down the stretch in the win for Babson.
