Wellesley Edged by Brandeis, 2-1

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Junior midfielder Sarah Jasak (Middletown, N.J.) knocked in the game-winning goal in the 80th minute to lift Brandeis (3-2) to a 2-1 victory over Wellesley (3-2) in a non-conference match on Tuesday afternoon.

Senior captain Lisa Kaplin (Armonk, N.Y.) put the Judges on the board early when she capitalized on a free kick by classmate and fellow captain Brittany Douglass (Tarzana, Calif.). Douglass served the ball into the box from just over the midline for Jasak to flick on to Kaplin who finished in the sixth minute. The Judges continued to pressure in the first half, out-shooting the host 16-1, but could not convert on any opportunity.

The Blue turned on the pressure in the second frame, creating opportunities in the offensive end. Dee Garrahan (Fairfax, Va.) ripped a shot off a corner from Alison Carney (Healdsburg, Calif.) only to have Douglass head the ball off the goal line. Wellesley finally found the back of the net in the 78th minute when first-year Haley Geller (Berkeley, Calif.) finished a ball that junior Amelia Manderscheid (St. Paul, Minn.) had blasted off the crossbar.

Jasak, however, broke the tie just two minutes later, when sophomore Jenna Lipawsky (Parkland, Fla.) slotted a ball into the box that Jasak pushed past the Wellesley keeper Katie Martore (Great Falls, Va.)

Martore stopped 14 shots for the Blue, while the Judge’s keeper Amber DeBole picked up seven saves in the win. Wellesley will return to action on Thursday when the team travels to Coast Guard for its first conference game of the season slated for a 7 PM start, while Brandeis will host Gordon that same day also under the lights at 7 PM.
