Wellesley Soccer Blanks Clark, 2-0
WELLESLEY,
Mass. – Wellesley Soccer tallied two second half
goals to top the visiting Clark University Cougars, 2-0, in a New
England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC)
game on Saturday afternoon. The win moves the Blue to 6-2 and 2-0
in NEWMAC play, while Clark falls to 2-7 and 0-2 in the NEWMAC.
Neither team
could find the back of the net in the first half, despite legitimate
chances at both ends. Wellesley’s goalie,
Katie Martore (Great Falls, Va.) made a point
blank save off a blast from Cougar Liz Adamcik (Florence,
Mass.), and junior
forward Jordan Akerley (Gilford, N.H.) hit the
post for Wellesley.
Jen
Lau (Honolulu,
Hawaii) netted her sixth goal of the season when she put the
Blue on the board in the 62nd minute. Lau chased down a
ball in the top of the box and blasted a shot into the
upper left corner of the net. Just four minutes later sophomore
Dee Garrahan (Fairfax, Va.) found the back of the net for the second
straight game. Garrahan ripped a shot from 35 yards out over the
head of Cougar netminder, Nolizwe Nondabula (Hayward, Ca.), to
add some insurance.
Katie Martore
(Great Falls, Va.) nabbed her fifth shutout in the 2-0 victory
as she stopped nine shots for Wellesley. Cougars senior
goalkeeper Thea Link (Irvington, N.Y.) made six saves in the first
half, while classmate Nondabula played in the net in the second
frame and picked up five saves.
The Blue will host WPI on Tuesday in a 4 p.m. match, and Clark
will return to action on Wednesday when the Cougars host MIT with
a start time slatted for 6:30 p.m.
