Wellesley Soccer Tops Gordon in Season Opener

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Junior forward, Jennifer Lau (Honolulu, Hawaii) finished a breakaway in the 51st minute to knock in the game-winning goal as the Wellesley soccer team (1-0-0) opened its 2006 season with a 2-1 victory over non-conference opponent, Gordon College (1-1-0).

After 25 minutes of back-and-forth play, Fighting Scots senior back, Jill Martinelli (South Easton, Mass.) chipped a ball over the Wellesley backs to have sophomore Kristen Goff (Denver, Pa.) run onto it and touch the ball past first-year Wellesley keeper, Katie Martore (Great Falls, Va.). The Blue retaliated just three minutes later when Lau played a ball into the box for senior co-captain, Alison Carney (Healdsburg, Calif.). Carney ripped a shot into the upper right corner to knot the game at 1-1 in the 28th minute.

Still tied after the break, Lau received the ball just over the midline, after Wellesley successfully cleared a Gordon corner. Turning and beating one defender, Lau took off and blasted the ball to upper left corner of the net for the game-winning score. Both teams enjoyed solid scoring chances in the second half, including a shot from the Fighting Scots that hit the post and a cross from Wellesley junior Amelia Manderscheid (St. Paul, Minn.) that Lau headed just over the crossbar, but neither team could finish on these opportunities. The Blue held on to win 2-1 in head coach Sarah Rahko’s first game at the helm of the program.

Martore was stellar in the net for Wellesley with six saves. Mary Griffenhagen (Winston-Salem, N.C.) turned away four shots for Gordon, first-year keeper Abby Ytzen (Des Moines, Iowa) stopped two shots for the Fighting Scots in the final 15 minutes of the match.

The Blue will return to action this weekend when the team hosts Montclair State, Simmons College, and Eastern Connecticut in the Wellesley Invitational. Wellesley faces Montclair at 12:00 p.m. in the first game of the tournament.
