Four First-Half Goals Propel Wellesley Soccer to a 5-1 Victory
over Mount Holyoke
WELLESLEY,
Mass. – The Wellesley soccer team spread around
its scoring Saturday afternoon as five different Blue players found
the back of the net en route to a 5-1 New England Women’s
and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) victory over visiting
Mount Holyoke College. With the win, Wellesley improves to 8-4
overall and 4-2 in the NEWMAC, while the Lyons remain winless
in the NEWMAC and drop to 1-10-1 on the season.
Wellesley jumped on the board just over a minute into the contest
when first-year Haley Geller (Berkeley, Calif.) dished a passed
to classmate, Catherine Caruso (Belmont, Mass.) who tallied her
first goal of the season. Loretta White (Northampton, Mass.) gave
the Blue a 2-0 advantage at 9:38 into the match when she finished
a feed from junior Jen Lau (Honolulu, Hawaii), and senior back,
Haley Stephenson (Fresno, Calif.) also found the back of the net
for the first time this season as she knocked home a corner kick
from senior co-captain, Alison Carney (Healdsburg, Calif.) 21:09
into the game to put the Blue on top, 3-0.
A blasted from Lyons midfielder, Adren
Hemstreet (San Anselmo, Calif.), cut Wellesley’s lead to 3-1 in the
thirty-eighth minute, but sophomore Dee Garrahan (Fairfax, Va.),
helped Wellesley
regain its 3-goal lead ten minutes later when she finished a pass
from Jordan Akerley (Gilford, N.H.) to give the Blue a 4-1 advantage
going into the break.
Wellesley, who out-shot the Lyons by a 31-6 margin, added further
insurance in the second frame thanks to a tally from Geller who
put away a pass from Lau. Lau grabbed her sixth assist on the play
as she helped give the Blue a 5-1 win over Mount Holyoke.
Wellesley first-year goalie, Katie
Martore (Great Falls, Va.),
started in net for the Blue, picking up one save, while sophomore
Samantha Littlejohn (Dayton, N.J.) finished the game with four
stops. Mount Holyoke keeper, Elizabeth Guenther (Pelham, N.Y.)
had fifteen saves in the loss.
Both teams will return to action on Tuesday at 4 p.m. with contests
against NEWMAC rivals. The Blue will host MIT, and Mount Holyoke
will return to their home field to face Springfield.
