Wellesley Uses Second Half Surge to Blank Simmons, 4-0, in Blue’s Invitational

WELLESLEY, Mass. – The Wellesley College soccer team exploded for three second half goals in a span of four minutes on its way to a 4-0 blanking of Simmons College (1-4) in Sunday’s Consolation Game of the Blue’s Invitational. The Blue improve to 2-1 on the season in a victory that saw first-years Haley Geller (Berkeley, Calif.) and Loretta White (Northampton, Mass.) score their first career goals in Wellesley College uniforms.

Wellesley controlled the pace of play in the first frame, out-shooting the Sharks by a 12-5 margin and gaining five corner kicks opportunities, to Simmons’ zero. The Blue, however, could not find the back of the net on any of these chances, including a 30 yard blast from first-year Catherine Caruso (Belmont, Mass.) that Simmons goalie, Kathleen Taglierli (Arlington, Mass), deflected just enough to skim the post and go wide.

After the break, Jennifer Lau (Honolulu, Hawaii) finally put Wellesley on the scoreboard in the 59th minute when she scored on a penalty kick after being taken down in the box on her way to goal. Just one minute later, Lau threaded a ball to Geller who was just outside the eighteen and fired the ball over the head of Sharks goalie, Laura Doran (North Andover, Mass.). White added an insurance goal for the Blue in the 62nd minute when she found a loose ball in the box and ripped a shot into the right-corner of the net. White, in her collegiate scoring debut, found the net again in the 78th minute when she knocked in a corner kick served by senior, co-captain, Alison Carney (Healdsburg, Calif.), to give the Blue the 4-0 victory.

First-year Wellesley goalie, Katie Martore (Great Falls, Va.), recorded six saves in her first collegiate shutout. Simmons keepers Taglierli, Doran, and Katelyn Cassidy (Stonington, Conn.) combined to stop 13 shots for the Sharks.

The Blue will return to action on Wednesday when the team travels to Emerson College for a non-conference game with a start time slated for 6 p.m.
