Smith Rallies to Defeat Wellesley, 2-1

Northampton, MA:  On a cold and windy afternoon, the Smith Pioneers improved their record to 9-6-1 overall, and 6-2-1 in NEWMAC as they defeated Wellesley College (9-6-0 overall, 5-4-0 NEWMAC).  This victory secures that Smith will play at home this Saturday in the first round of NEWMAC playoffs.

Both Smith and Wellesley came out aggressively in the first half of play; however neither team was able to put away a goal.  Then, about twenty minutes into the second half, Wellesley got on the board with junior Jordan Akerley (Gilford, NH) scoring a goal, assisted by Haley Geller (Berkeley, CA).  10 minutes later, Smith answered with a goal of their own scored by first-year Valerie Driscoll (Keene, NH), assisted by Dalyn Houser (Atlanta, GA) and Etta Grover-Silva (Arcata, CA).  Shortly after that, Sara Dilegge (Mashpee, MA) set up sophomore Brittoni Famous (Collegeville, PA) with a great pass to put away the game winning goal with less than 10 minutes remaining.

Smith goalkeeper Lauren Bachtel (Dublin, OH) played the entire game and had 2 saves while allowing 1 goal.  Katie Martore (Great Falls, VA) played the entire game for Wellesley with 9 saves, allowing 2 goals.

This Saturday, Smith will host Wellesley again, at 1 p.m., in the first round of NEWMAC playoffs.
