Wellesley Socer Edged by Springfield, 2-1

WELLESLEY, Mass. –Springfield’s Lauren Peltier (Agawam, Mass.) scored in the 58th minute to lift the Pride to a 2-1 victory over host Wellesley College in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) soccer action on Saturday afternoon. Wellesley, who was previously tied for third in conference standings with the Pride, drops to 9-5 overall and 5-3 in the NEWMAC, while Springfield improves to 10-4 and 6-2 in NEWMAC play.

Springfield opened the scoring at 7:14 into the match, as junior Lindsay Bugbee (Granby, Conn.) finished a scramble in front of the goal to give the Pride a 1-0 advantage. Springfield continued its offensive pressure in the first frame, holding 10-5 and 4-0 advantages on shots and corner kicks respectively, but Wellesley’s first-year goalie Katie Martore (Great Falls, Va.) nabbed eight first-half saves to keep Springfield from capitalizing on any chances before the break.

The Blue evened the game at 1-1 in the second stanza when sophomore midfielder Dee Garrahan (Fairfax, Va.) finished a long pass from senior co-captain Elise Duryee-Browner (San Francisco, Calif.). The tally was Garrahan’s fifth on the season. The tied, however, was short-lived as Peltier’s game-winning score came just four minutes later. Kayla Thibeault (Lebanon, Conn.) served a direct kick from the left side of field which Peltier knocked past Martore for the 2-1 victory.

Martore turned away 15 shots for the Blue, while Springfield’s sophomore Sue Jenney (East Granby, Conn.) notched 7 saves in the Pride’s win.

Wellesley will close out its regular season on Wednesday when the Blue travels to Smith for a 3 p.m. NEWMAC contest, while Springfield wraps up its regular season action on Tuesday when the Pride hosts WPI under the lights at 7 p.m.
