WELLESLEY TENNIS FALLS TO MIT 6-3
Wellesley, Mass. – M.I.T., the defending
New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference Women’s
Tennis Champions, captured four singles matches and two doubles
matches to edge Wellesley 6-3 in a NEWMAC tennis match, Tuesday
at Wellesley. The loss was the second straight for Wellesley which
drops to 3-2 while MIT wins its fourth straight to improve to 4-2.
First-years Alex Barrows (Tucson, Ariz.) and Emily McDonald (Williamsville,
N.Y.) defeated MIT’s Shima Rayej (Washington, D.C.) and Jill
Konowich (Little Silver, N.J.) started Wellesley with an 8-1 win
at no. 1 doubles, but MIT’s no. 2 doubles tandem of Caroline
Tien (Tampa, Fla.) and Jaclyn Chichon (Tampa, Fla.) and no. 3 doubles
team of Ruby Pai (San Deigo, Calif.) and Jen Hipp (Fountain Valley,
Calif.) defeated Wellesley’s Erica Fitzhugh (Little Rock,
Ark) and Hana Freymiller (Anchorage, Alaska) and Deb Norris (Cheltenham,
Pa.) and Kelly Turner (Worcester, Mass.), 8-5 and 8-1 respectively.
In singles action Barrows and McDonald again garnered Wellesley’s
points earning wins at no. 2 and no. 3 singles. Barrows defeated
MIT’s Tien in a hard-fought 7-6 (5), 1-6, 6-3 three game set.
McDonald maintained her undefeated status at no. 3 singles with
a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Chichon. McDonald is now 5-0 in singles
action and is Wellesley’s lone player with a perfect record.
