Wellesley Tennis at New England Women’s Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament

AMHERST, Mass. – The Wellesley College tennis team wrapped up competition at the New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITT) this weekend at Amherst College on Sunday afternoon. Highlights from the tournament included number one doubles pair of Jenna Mezin (Haiku, Hawaii) and Hali Walther (Navarre, Fla.) defeating Alicia Menezes and Brittany Berckes of Amherst in the quarterfinals for the first time in their collegiate careers. The duo went on to advance to the finals of their flight, defeating Luten and Deary from Tufts (8-5) in the semi-finals before Sarah D’Elia and Kristen Raymond of Bowdoin topped the 2006 ITA All-American pair 8-4 in the championship match.

Wellesley’s top finishes in singles brackets also came from Mezin and Walther. Mezin downed Allison Dunn of Colby(6-1, 6-7 (5), 6-2), Ana Katz from Brandeis (6-1, 6-1), and Connecticut College’s Beret Remak (7-6(5), 3-6, 7-5) to advance to the semi-finals before dropping a 6-4, 6-2 match to the eventual champion, Cary Gibson of Williams.

Walther’s run to the semi-finals included two set wins over Helena Jedziriak of Mount Holyoke (6-1, 6-1) and Kate Johnson (7-5, 6-3) of Smith and an intense three-set come-from-behind victory over Tufts’ Kylyn Deary (3-6, 7-6(5) 6-3). Walther’s semi-final loss also came at the hands of a Williams player as Ashley Parsons won 7-5, 6-2 to move on to the final round of her flight.
