Wellesley Falls to University of Dubuque,

Nazareth beats Bridgewater State

WELLESLEY, Mass. – In a hard-fought opening match, junior middle hitter Jena Goedken led the University of Dubuque to a four-set win over the Wellesley College, 30-28, 30-20, 26-30, 39-37.  The win raises the Spartans to 17-10.  The Blue fall to 12-6.

After a slow start on both sides of the net, Dubuque broke away to take a 15-9 lead in game one, with five-point serving from senior Natalie Howard.  With solid blocking and solid floor defense, the Spartans maintained a solid advantage for the remainder of the game.  Despite a late Wellesley charge that trimmed the score to 29-28, Dubuque held on for a 30-28 victory. 

The Spartans carried the momentum into game two, dominating their hosts 30-20.  But the Blue rebounded in game three, taking an early 9-4 lead on a serving run by sophomore Emily Peters.  Dubuque battled back, relying heavily on Goedken’s net play, and tied the game at 24-24, before Wellesley broke away for good, taking game three by a score of 30-26. 

Game four proved to be the most exciting of the evening.  The score remained close throughout the set, with strong hitting and digging on both sides of the net.  Wellesley broke away to a 29-26 lead late in the game, threatening to even the match at two sets a piece.  But the Spartans scored four straight points to take a 30-29 lead.  Both teams traded seven sideouts before Dubuque sealed the match with a 39-37 win.
Goedken led the Spartans at the net, with 26 kills and nine blocks.  Katelyn Herrman chipped in 12 kills.  Senior setter Jessica Browning tallied 55 assists.  Senior libero Abbie Hillard led the effort with 20 digs, and Browning added 18.  Wellesley was led at the net by sophomore Jessica Duff with 19 kills and seven blocks.  Waldman added 15 kills and 10 blocks.  Sophomore Emily Peters tallied 51 assists.  First-year Naomi Iwata and Duff chipped in 28 and 22 digs, respectively.

In the second match of the evening, sophomore outside hitter Laura Persico led Nazareth College to a straight-set victory over Bridgewater State, 30-21, 30-18, 30-27.  The win improves Nazareth’s record to 10-15.  Bridgewater State falls to 10-11.

In the opening game, Nazareth jumped to an early lead on four-point serving run from freshman Kate Reed.  On her second turn at the service line, Reed increased the Golden Flyers’ lead to 19-11.  Nazareth never looked back, cruising to 30-21 win.  Game two followed the same pattern, as seven-point serving run from Reed gave Nazareth a 19-9 lead.  The Golden Flyers held on for a 30-18 victory and a 2-0 lead.  Bridgewater State regrouped and played even in game three, sticking with Nazareth throughout the set and tying the game at 24.  A three-point serving run from freshman libero Natasha Villane gave Nazareth a 27-24 lead.  The Golden Flyers held on for a 30-27 win.

Nazareth was led by Laura Persico, with 15 kills and 12 digs.  Kate Reed added six kills and seven aces, while junior setter Elyse Monje tallied 32 assists.  Carra Vanderstyne chipped in 16 digs in the winning effort.  Bridgewater State was led once again by junior middlehitter Kelsey Collasius, with 11 kills and three blocks.  Amanda Clement added five kills and one block.  Senior setter Kassie Moore tallied 23 assists, while Shannon Desmond chipped in 12 digs.
