The Wellesley Basketball Team concluded the 2007-08 season with a 7-16 overall win/loss record (4-9 in conference play). While we fell short of our stated winning percentage goal of .500 we did make several significant strides from last year as we continue our climb back to competitive respectability. Led by the junior trio of Jessica Duff (Abington, England), Julia Thomas (Concord, CA) and Courtney Richter (Sinking Spring, PA) we finished in 6th place in NEWMAC action and qualified for the postseason conference tournament after a one-year absence. We also beat crosstown rival Babson College for the first time in eight tries in a thrilling 84-75 overtime victory at Wellesley in late January.
Lone senior Courtney Pelley capped off her career by setting personal season bests in just about every statistical category. Upon graduation this spring she is off to California for two years to teach in the Teach For America Program. Junior Jessica Duff was selected to the NEWMAC All-Conference Team while classmate Courtney Richter was named to the NEWMAC Academic All-Conference Team. As our starting frontcourt, Jessica and Julia combined to average 24.8 points and 19.1 rebounds per game, ranking them both among the conference leaders in both categories. Sophomore Katie Martore (Great Falls. VA) was among the conference leaders in assists and steals averaged per game. First years Meggan Carkin (Pepperell, MA) and Katie Frett (Hallowell, ME) earned solid minutes off of the bench as their game contributions became more noteworthy.
As we begin preparations for next season, our off-season workouts will consist of strength training, cardio conditioning, and individual offensive development. While we are still putting the finishing touches on our recruiting class we have already received commitments from two talented Floridians. KD Stearns is a 6'0 inside-outside threat from Eustis while Elisha Orama is a 5'5 guard from Miramar. Our goal is to add another key name or two to the Class of 2012 before the end of April!
