WELLESLEY, MA - The Wellesley College fencing team completed their best showing in 15 years at the New England Championships this weekend.  The Blue competed strongly in all three weapons, with a standout performance by first-year Hannah Braaten (Concord, MA) who won the gold medal in foil.

For the weapon squads, Wellesley took the gold medal in Foil, besting MIT by three touches.  The Blue also took third in the Epee competition and placed seventh in the Sabre competition.

In foil, Braaten finished ahead of 42 participants and went undefeated in the final round.  Also contributing to the squad's gold-medal performance, first-year Wendy Chin (New York, NY) finished fifth, and teammate Tess DeLean (St. Louis, MO) finished 11th in the weapon.

In the Epee competition, sophomore Emily Johnson (Pittstown, NJ) finished fourth while sophomore Annemarie Kocab (Farmington Hills, MI) finished 11th.  Rounding out a great day for Wellesley, senior Katie Kinnaird (Bethesda, MD) finished 8th in the Sabre competition.

Overall, Wellesley finished second, ahead of powerhouse Brandeis University and all of its sister colleges.  The Blue were edged only by MIT, who placed first in the team standings.
