Braaten Finishes 6th as Wellesley Fencing Competes at NCAA Regionals
WELLESLEY, Mass. – Sophomore Hannah Braaten (Concord, MA) finished sixth to highlight the Wellesley College fencing team competing at the Northeast Regional on Sunday at MIT.

Braaten had a spectacular day, advancing through pool play with four wins to
finish the first round ranked 12th overall. In the second round of rankings, she pulled out three victories and advanced to the final round of 12 fencers in ninth place. Braaten had a great showing in the finals, with five victories to take sixth place in the Northeast Region. She recorded wins over Shelby MaCleod of Harvard who finished third, NYU's Zoe Evans, Makeeva Valeria of Yale, BC's Jennifer Collacino and Jessica Tranquada of Cornell.
In other foil action for Wellesley, sophomore Wendy Chin (New York, NY) picked up a win in pool player over MIT's Graham Lindley to finish 28th overall. Classmate Tess DeLean (St. Louis, MO) rounded out the action for the Blue with a 36th-place finish.
In epee, Wellesley had two fencers advance out of pool play. Junior Emily Johnson (Pittstown, NJ) narrowly missed making the final round, finishing 13th overall. She picked up four wins in pool play to advance to the second round where she won three bouts but finished one touch shy of making the finals. Sophomore Ashley Paquin (Cumberland, RI) recorded three wins in pool play, advancing to the second round where she picked up a victory and finished 20th overall.
Also in epee, sophomore Anne Benjamin (Fairfield, CT) picked up three wins for Wellesley, but just missed the cutoff for the second round, finishing 29th overall.
The Wellesley fencing team finished the 2008-09 season with a 9-6 record.
Based on regular season bouts, finish at the regional meet, and other seeding factors, Braaten was selected as the first alternate for the NCAA Fencing National Championships.
