Wellesley Fencing Goes 3-4 in Northeast Conference Action
MEDFORD, Mass. - The Wellesley College fencing team went 3-2 in Northeast Conference action on Saturday. The Blue picked up wins over Tufts, Smith and Dartmouth but fell in two tight bouts against Vassar and Boston College.
Once again the Wellesley Foil and Epee squads proved their dominance, going undefeated in five matches on the day.
Against Tufts, the Blue took foil by an 8-1 score and also won the epee competition 6-3. In sabre, the Blue fell 8-1 but picked up a 15-12 overall team victory.
Both the foil and epee squads picked up wins to start the Vassar match, with Wellesley taking foil 7-2 and epee, 5-4. However, Vassar pulled out an 8-1 win in sabre matches and narrowly took the match with a 14-13 final score.
Wellesley rebounded against Smith with an 18-9 victory. Foil went undefeated, sweeping the Pioneers 9-0. After the epee squad picked up a 7-2 victory, sabre fell 7-2, but Wellesley had already built a substantial lead and sealed the win at 18-9.
The Wellesley sabre squad earned their first victory of the 2008-09 season against Dartmouth. The Blue pulled out a close 5-4 victory while the foil squad (9-0) and the epee squad (8-1) also picked up wins, to give the overall match to Wellesley, 22-5.
To close out the competition, the Blue lost a close match to Boston College. After foil picked up a 5-4 win and epee won 6-3, the sabre squad fell 8-1 to give BC the 15-4 team victory.
Wellesley fencing will next compete at the New England Championships at Mount Holyoke on February 22nd.
