SOUTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Wellesley College fencing team opened the 2008-09 season competing at the New England Intercollegiate Fencing Conference Fall Invitational (The Big One) hosted by Smith College. The day was highlighted by two top-10 finishers for Wellesley.
In foil, sophomores
Hannah Braaten (Concord, MA) and
Wendy Chin (New York, NY) both went through the pool round undefeated while sophomore
Tess Delean (St. Louis, MO) won five of her six pool bouts as all three of them advanced to the next round. Braaten and Chin each picked up three more wins in the table of 64 to finish 6th and 7th overall while Delean picked up one more win and finished 18th. Also competiting in foil,
Samantha Kim (Westlake Village, CA) picked up a win in the pool round and finished with an overall ranking of 54 out of 70 competitors.
In epee, junior
Emily Johnson (Pittstown, NJ) finished 11th place overall after advancing through the pool round and picking up two wins in the table of 64. Sophomore
Ashley Paquin (Cumberland, RI) and junior
Annemarie Kocab (Farmington Hills, MI) also advanced past the pool round. Paquin finished 15th overall while Kocab ended with a ranking of 20. Sophomore
Anne Benjamin (Fairfield, CT) also competed in epee, finishing 51st overall.
In sabre, sophomore
Elizabeth Rowen (Santa Cruz, CA) and first-year
Diana Tantillo (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) both advanced to the table of 64. They finished back-to-back in the final rankings with Rowen placing 43rd and Tantillo finishing 44th. Wellesley first-years
Jiali Lin (New York, NY) and
Zsofia Schweger (Budapest, Hungary) also competed, taking 66th and 69th places.
Wellesley fencing will return to action on Saturday, November 22nd at 8:00am as the Blue travel to UNH for the first Northeast Conference meet of the season.
