Wellesley Field Hockey Players Earn All-Conference Honors;
Frett Named Rookie of the Year; Vaill Named Coach of the Year

The New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) announced its 2007 Field Hockey Post-season awards on Tuesday.  Wellesley was well represented on the team with four honorees.

Named to the first-team were Callie Lekas (Brewster, MA) and Katie Sang (Cupertino, CA).  Earning second team honors were Emily Hewitt (Alexandria, VA) and Katie Frett (Hallowell, ME) who was also named NEMWAC Rookie of the Year.  In addition, head coach Becca Vaill, was named the NEWMAC Coach of the Year.

Lekas, a sophomore forward, earns her first All-Conference honors.  In 2007, she led the team in scoring with 14 goals and 10 assists for 38 points and scored four game-winning goals.  Lekas was also ranked in the top-10 in the conference in goals, assists and points and nationally in Division III in those same categories.

Sang, a junior midfielder, makes her All-Conference debut.   A force on both sides of the ball, Sang finished the season with two goals and nine assists for 13 points.  Sang's assist total ranked her third in the NEWMAC and also 20th in Division III.

Hewitt, a sophomore goalkeeper, returns to the All-Conference team after being named to the second team last season.  In 2007, she established herself as one of the top keepers in New England with 10 shutouts and a miniscule 0.97 goals against average.  Her shutout total ranked her first in the NEWMAC and fourth in the nation while she was ranked 12th in the nation in goals against average and 21st in save percentage.

Frett, a first-year forward, was tabbed as the 2007 NEWMAC Rookie of the Year.  In her first collegiate campaign, she racked up seven goals for 14 points and tallied the game-winner in overtime against WPI.

Vaill, in just her third season at Wellesley, earns her first Coach of the Year honors.  In three season, she's led the Blue to a remarkable 44-17 record.  In 2006, Vaill's squad received a bid to the NCAA playoffs while in her rookie campaign she led Wellesley to their fifth ECAC Championship.

The Wellesley field hockey team finished the 2007 season with a 13-6 record playing in seven games that went into overtime.  The team advanced to the finals of the NEWMAC tournament before bowing out to Springfield.
