Wellesley Field Hockey Players Earn NEWMAC All-Conference Honors
BABSON PARK, Mass. – The New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) announced its 2009 Field Hockey Postseason Awards on Tuesday. Wellesley took home three All-Conference awards, with senior Callie Lekas (Brewster, MA) and juniors Katie Frett (Hallowell, ME) and Kate Cushing (Danvers, MA) honored.
Lekas, a forward, was honored with her third-straight appearance on the NEWMAC first-team. The team's leading scorer in 2007, 2008 and 2009, she ends her storied career at Wellesley with 56 goals and 22 assists for 134 career points. This season, she racked-up a career high of 16 goals, while also adding four assists. Lekas ranked sixth in the conference in points against NEWMAC teams while also tallying four game-winning goals this season.
Frett, a forward, earned first-team All-Conference honors after being named to the second team in 2007 and 2008. She was a presence all over the field for Wellesley, playing a key role in both offensive and defensive corners. Frett finished the year with five goals for 10 total points, adding one game-winning goal and two defensive saves.
Cushing, a midfielder, makes her first All-Conference appearance, being named to the second team this season. She finished second on Wellesley with 25 total points on seven goals and 11 assists. She notched one game-winning goal, while averaging 1.32 points per game. Cushing ended the regular season tied for 2nd in the NEWMAC in assists.
Wellesley field hockey finished the 2009 season with an overall record of 12-8, 6-2 in the NEWMAC. The Blue took home the NEWMAC regular season title and advanced to the NEWMAC semifinals before dropping a 3-2 overtime decision to Springfield.
