Wellesley Squash Completes Season at Howe Cup with Win Over Colgate
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Wellesley
College squash team wrapped up the 2008-09 season competing in the "D" division at the Howe Cup National Championship at Harvard University. The Blue went 1-2, finishing with a ranking of 31 in the nation.
Wellesley dropped its first match of the championship, 9-0 to William Smith and then fell in a tight 5-4 contest to Haverford. The Blue rebounded, however, finishing the season on a good note, with an 8-0 sweep over Colgate to seal the 31st in the country rating.
In a 9-0 loss to William Smith, first-year Andrea Mui (Hong Kong) played the toughest match of the day in the first spot, eventually falling 9-5, 8-10, 10-9, 9-7. Senior Jackie Shaw (Washington Crossing, PA) also has a close third game in her match, but fell 9-2, 9-0, 10-9 in three games.
Against Haverford,
Wellesley got two wins at the top of the ladder from Mui at number one and Shaw at number two. Cabelle Ahn (Richmond, BC) won her match in three games in the third spot while Dora Hui (Boston, MA) was also a winner, taking the fourth-spot match in three games. The Blue also saw a hard-fought loss from Faith Kim (La Jolla, CA) who dropped her fifth position match in five games, 1-9, 9-7, 6-9, 9-4, 10-9.
In the final match of the Championship, Wellesley swept Colgate, 8-0.
Each Wellesley player won their match in three games, with
Ashley Stevens (East Harwich, MA), Kim, Carrie Ng (Springfield, MA) and Ally Ewing (Philadelphia, PA) all recording their first wins of the 2009 Howe Cup.
The Wellesley squash team finished the 2008-09 season with a 3-17 record.
