Wellesley College Swimming and Diving Takes Second at Camel Invitational
Sorenson Sets School Record in 1-Meter Diving

NEW LONDON, CT – The Wellesley College swimming and diving team took second place at the Camel Invitational at Connecticut College.  The Blue picked up three wins and three second place finishes in session one, added both a first place and a second place finish in session two and closed out the weekend with two wins in session three. Wellesley's Kate Sorenson (Bolton, MA) also won both diving events.

In the 200-yard freestyle relay, the Wellesley team of Catherine Poon (McLean, VA), Dana Dutton (Anacortes, WA), Carolyn O'Hara (Bedford, NH), Savanna Johnson (Bloomington, IN) took first place in a time of 1:41.73.

Wellesley also picked up wins in the 50-fly and 50-free.  In the fly, Elise Spedden (Clarksville, MD) took top honors in a time of 28.46 while in the freestyle event, Poon placed first in 24.92.

Rounding out session one action, Johnson took second in the 50-yard breakstroke in a time of 32.73, Alex Simas (Bellevue, WA) placed second in the 500-free in 5:19.13 and in the 200-IM, Jenny Wu (Livingston, NJ) took second in 2:17.59.

In session two, Wu picked up a win for Wellesley finishing the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:10.59.  The Blue wrapped up session two action with a second place finish in the 200-yard medley relay.  The team of Spedden, Johnson, Alex Stark (Moorestown, NJ) and Poon finished the relay in a time of 1:59.18.

Wellesley finished out the weekend with strong finishes in session three on Sunday.  The Blue picked up two wins and also finished second in two events.

Simas picked up a win for Wellesley in the 1650-free, finishing the event in 18:16.65.  Wu also had a strong session three, winning the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:32.09 and finishing second in the 200-yard backstroke.  Hilary Gram (Hopkinton, MA) rounded out the day for Wellesley with a second place finish in the 200-yard fly in 36.07.

On the diving board, Sorenson won both the 1-meter and 3-meter events.  In the 1-meter event, she set a new school record by scoring a 268.5, another NCAA cut score.  The two wins add to Sorenson's solid diving record in which the only defeats that she has recorded this season have been to NCAA National Champions.

Overall, Wellesley took second in the event with 707 points behind host Connecticut College's 910.  Coast Guard wrapped up third-place with 558 points, while Division II East Stroudsburg's 365 points placed them fourth.
