Wellesley Swimming & Diving Sends Pair to Nationals

Psych Sheet (PDF)

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College Swimming and Diving will send two athletes to the NCAA National Championships on March 13-15 in Oxford, Ohio.  Junior diver Kate Sorenson (Bolton, Mass.) and first-year swimmer Cathy Poon (McLean, Va.) will represent the Blue.

Sorenson makes her first NCAA National Championship appearance after a third-place finish in the 3-meter event, and a fifth-place finish in the 1-meter board at the NEWMAC Championships.  Her score of 461.00 in the 3-meter board, was second to only Doria Holbrook of MIT, the defending national champion, and Shanti Freitas of Smith who took 3rd nationally in 2006.

The diving event will be a close-knit contest with many of the divers, half of which are from the northeast, having already competed against each other.  “I am friends with many of the divers that will be at Nationals this year,” said Sorenson.  “It’ll be fun and exciting to compete against such a talented group.”

Also representing Wellesley, Poon will compete in the 50-freestyle where she’s seeded 10th with a time of 24.00.  The first-year placed third in the event at the NEWMAC Championships. "Because my team and I have practiced for months for this moment, I am confident that I am fully prepared," said Poon.  "All I can do is anxiously await next week and do my best."

The 2008 NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships will be held from March 13-15 at Miami University's Corwin M. Nixon Aquatic Center in Oxford, Ohio.  The event is hosted by the College of Wooster.
