Wellesley Swimming & Diving Defeats Smith College

WELLESLEY, MA - The Wellesley College swimming and diving team used nine first-place finishes to outlast Smith College 179-119 on Senior Day at Chandler Pool in Wellesley.

Wellesley was led by senior Jenny Wu (Livingston, NJ) who won three individual events, while Elise Spedden (Clarksville, MD), Alex Simas (Bellevue, WA), Dana Dutton (Anacortes, WA) and Cathy Poon (McLean, VA) each recorded one individual first-place finish. 

Wu swam to a win in the 100-breast in a time of 1:12.56 while Becky Hanna (Hong Kong) took second with a time of 1:16.80.  In the 200-breast, Wu’s time of 2:33.22 topped all competitors and in the 200-IM, she improved on her seed time finishing the race in 2:17.26.

Also for Wellesley, Spedden notched her win in the 100-back, recording a time of 1:05.49;  Dutton took the 200-free in 2:05.32; and Poon won the 50-free in a time of 24.62.

Simas picked up a win in the 1,000-free with a time of 10:54.69.  She also placed second to Smith’s Marly Pineda (Bosque Farms, NM) in the 500-free.  Pineda’s 5:18.43 narrowly edged Simas’ 5:18.45.

For Smith, Pineda also took the 200-fly in a time of 2:14.26.  She edged out Wellesley’s Hilary Gram (Hopkinton, MA) who’s time of 2:14.32 was the second fastest of her career.

Also for the Pioneers, Shanti Freitas (Evanston, IL) won both diving events with NCAA provisional scores and Lily Seidman (Westfield, IN) added two wins.  Christine Dzialo (Belchertown, MA) rounded out the scoring for the Pioneers with one first-place finish.

Freitas recorded a 284.77 in the 1-meter dive and later scored a 305.48 in the three-meter dives.  Seidman picked up wins in the 100-fly (1:01.18) and the 100-free (55.27).  Dzialo’s win came in the 200-back with a 2:23.28 win over Wellesley’s Allie Williams (River Forest, IL) who swam a 2:23.45.

Wellesley took both relay events, with a 1:57.07 in the 200-Medley and a 3:49.93 in the 400-free relay.  The Wellesley medley team was comprised of Spedden, Wu, Savanna Johnson (Bloomington, IL) and Poon while the free relay team was made up of Poon, Hanna, Dutton and Johnson.

Wellesley (7-3) and Smith (3-4) will both compete in the Seven Sisters Championships next week at Smith College.  Saturday’s action begins at 10:00am while Sunday’s events start at 9:30am.
