Wellesley Swimming & Diving Places Fourth at NEWMAC Championships

Wellesley, Mass. - The Wellesley College swimming and diving team placed fourth overall at the 2008 NEWMAC Championships.
The Blue notched 12 top-five finishes at the event with Jenny Wu earning All-Conference honors in the 400 IM. Wu took second in the event with a time of 4:46.34, two seconds faster than her seed time.
Also highlighting the Wellesley effort at NEWMACs, diver Kate Sorenson took third place in the five-meter and fifth-place in the three-meter boards. Her scores have qualified her for the National Championships in both events.
The Wellesley relay teams also fared will. In the 200-yard freestyle relay, the team of Savanna Johnson, Dana Dutton, Wu and Cathy Poon took third place overall with a time of 1:39.25 while in the 400-free relay, the same team took fifth place in a time of 3:41.30. In the 800-freestyle relay, Wu, Dutton, Emilie Mitten and Alex Simas placed fourth overall with a time of 8:09.34, besting their seed time by nearly five seconds.
The medley relay team of Elise Spedden, Savanna Johnson, Laura Wier and Cathy Poon took third place in the 200-yard event with a time of 1:53.45. Later, in the 400 medley, the team of Poon, Spedden, Hilary Gram and Wu notched a fifth-place finish with a time of 4:10.54.
Other top finishers included Simas taking fourth in the 500-free in a time of 5:12.44, Wu finishing fourth in the 200 IM in 2:13.60, and Johnson placing fourth in the 100-breast in 1:10.26. Also, in the 50-freestyle event, Poon and Johnson finished back-to-back in fourth and fifth places with times of 24.24 and 24.30.
Poon will join Sorenson at the NCAA National Championships in Oxford, Ohio on March 13-15.
