2008-09 Recap: The Wellesley tennis team finished their fall season with a 9-2 overall record and a 7-0 record in the NEWMAC. The team posted shutouts versus Smith and Clark, and lost a close 5-4 decision to reigning NCAA Division III Champion Williams College. The team finished the fall season with a NEWMAC championship and a bid into the NCAA tournament in the spring. Wellesley garnered multiple All-Conference honors, including first team doubles for Marie Watanbe and Grace Cheng, Shivani Saxena and Jacquline Shen, first team singles for Shivani Saxena, Nathalie Herman, and Grace Cheng, second team singles for Marie Watanabe and Mohona Siddique. Watanabe was also honored as the NEWMAC Rookie of the Year. In the spring, the team advanced to the NCAA Regional Semifinals. In the NCAA Tournament, Wellesley opened with a 5-0 victory over Endicott, but fell to Middlebury in the next round. The Blue ended the 2008-09 season with an 18-6 overall record. First-year Marie Watanabe closed out her first season with a #10 singles ranking in the Northeast. Wellesley also had two doubles teams ranked in the region, with Watanabe and Grace Cheng coming in at #6, while Mohona Siddique and Jacqueline Shen finished ranked 9th.
