Wellesley Seniors Earn NEWMAC Player of the Week Honors;
Kendall Honored for Singles Play, Devine/Walther for Doubles
WELLESLEY, MA – Wellesley College senior tennis players Jenny Kendall (Auburn, ME), Trish Devine (Westport, MA) and Hali Walther (Navarre, FL) were honored by the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) as players of the week for the final week of the fall season. Kendall earned singles honors while Devine and Walther teamed up to earn doubles honors as the trio complete a four-year sweep of the NEWMAC Title.
After a teammate’s injury last week, Kendall stepped up to play in the NEWMAC Tournament. With Wellesley clinging to a 2-1 lead after doubles in the championship match, a loss for Kendall would have evened the score at 2-2 and allowed MIT to take a 3-2 lead as the Engineers won the next singles point. Kendall, however, withstood the pressure and won 6-3, 6-0 over Elisa McCree of MIT giving Wellesley a 3-1 lead which they’d eventually turn into a 5-2 Championship win.
In their last NEWMAC Tournament appearance, the Devine and Waltherr cruised through their doubles matches en route to the Championship title. In the semi-final round, the tandem picked up an 8-1 win over the Wheaton team of Maya Milic-Strkalj and Katie Knies.
On Sunday, in the championship match, Devine and Walther did not drop a set as they defeated the MIT pair of Anisa McCree and Liz Denys by an 8-0 score.
Wellesley finished the fall portion of the season with a stellar 10-1 record. The Blue will return to the courts in March for the spring season.
