WELLESLEY, Mass. – Wellesley College is pleased to announce the hiring of Wendy Berry as head squash coach and assistant professor of physical education. Berry, who holds a degree in Sports Science from Brighton University in Sussex, England, is an internationally recognized player and coach.
Berry brings experience in all facets of the game to Wellesley. She holds the highest-level coaching certificates and also has top-level international playing experience. In addition, Berry has been a coach at nearly all levels of the game including leading college, professional and national squads.
In her most recent position as a club professional at Merion Cricket Club, Berry coached both junior and adult players, leading clinics for every level of play. During that time, she served as coach of the Philadelphia Howe Cup teams, which compete in the United States National Team Tournament.
“To say that squash has been significant in the life of Wendy Berry would be an understatement. Wendy brings to Wellesley the impressive experiences of a world class athlete, coach and teacher, a true student of the game,” said Bridget Belgiovine, Wellesley’s Director of Athletics. “We are confident that Wendy's diverse background will enhance the experiences and opportunities for our students and bring back the winning attitude and tradition for our squash program. We are thrilled to have Wendy join our department.”
Berry’s storied squash career also includes numerous positions at summer camps. In 2005, she served as Director of the Lancaster County Day School Summer Squash Camp held at Franklin and Marshall College where she created and taught the camp curriculum. In addition, Berry has worked at the Princeton University Summer Squash Camps for over 10 years and has also held positions at the National Capitol Squash Camp, Dartmouth College’s Power Squash Academy and Squash Smarts held at Drexel University.
“I am absolutely delighted to be named the Head Squash Coach at Wellesley College which has long been a standard bearer for women’s leadership as well as personal and academic development, and where squash has a long and rich tradition,” said Berry. “I am particularly looking forward to working with the young women on the Wellesley team whose commitment to the sport kept the squash tradition alive over the past two years as they fought to regain varsity status. I will be honored to coach them as we work together to continue to re-build the Wellesley squash program.”
As a player, Berry won the World Doubles Championship in the Veterans division in 2002. She also won the British Open twice, once as part of a doubles team in 1983 and once again in the individual Over 35 event in 1988. Berry was also a member of the England National “B” squad for five years and also played for England in the Over 45 team that competed in the Home Internationals in Dublin in 1999.
