How to Read and Search SCT Banner 7 Documentation via Banner Bookshelf
The Banner 7 Bookshelf includes PDF files for SCT Banner documentation. To use these PDF files, the users must have Adobe Reader installed on their client machines. Users can open, read, search and print the PDF files.
A user may launch Banner 7, click on the link to bookshelf on the right, then read or conduct basic search (search one single pdf file).
How to Read SCT Banner 7.x Documentation via Banner Bookshelf
Once the Bookshelf is open, you see two panes. The left pane contains a bookmark
for each SCT Banner baseline and line extension product (Accounts Receivable,
Advancement, Finance, Financial Aid, General, Human Resources, Student, etc.) The
right pane is "SCT BANNER BOOKSHELF Main Menu". Click on the "Main Menu" and you will see bookshelf "How to" documentation.
When you click the plus sign in front of a product bookmark, the bookmark expands to show you bookmarks for that product's manual. When you click the plus sign in front of a manual bookmark, the bookmark expands to show you a list of the chapter in the manual. To open a chapter, click the chapter bookmark. Each chapter has its own bookmark.
How to Conduct Basic Search

select a pdf file

click the "Search" icon in the toolbar

In "What word or phrase would you like to search for?" enter the word or phrase you like to search

Click the "Search" button.

The "Results" window will open showing each sentence containing your Search request.
How To Conduct Advanced Search
The Banner 7 Search component also lets the users conduct advanced search -- full-text searches of multiple files without having to find or open the individual files first.
Prerequisite for Advanced Search:

Upgrade to the full version of Adobe Reader 7 is required for Banner 7 Bookshelf full-text search feature. Banner 7 Bookshelf index, created in Acrobat 7, cannot be read by a user with Adobe Reader 5 or 6.

The latest version of Adobe Reader is freely available from the Adobe web site. Downloading Adobe Reader: Go to this URL: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html and follow the directions given by Adobe.

drag the Banner Bookshelf icon from \\Ntm\Banner\Banner 7 to your desktop. This is one-time job.

Whenever you want to launch the bookshelf, just simply double click the icon on your desktop.

To set Adobe Reader 7 Search preference: Access the "Edit" menu and select Edit>Preferences>Search. Set your preferences. Click the OK button.

To set Adobe Reader 7 General preference: (To keep the Bookshelf document open while viewing other files, set the following preference:) Access the "Edit" menu and
select Preferences>General>Miscellaneous. Uncheck the "Open cross-document links in same window" checkbox. Click the OK button.

Specify which manuals (General, Student, Finance, etc.) to search by adding an index. To add an index file for searching:
1 Click the "Search" icon in the toolbar.
2 In the Adobe Reader 7.0 "Search PDF" window, click the "Use Advanced Search Options" link at the bottom of the window.
3 In the "Search PDF" window, click the "Look In" pull-down list.
4 Next choose "Select Index..." and select "Add".
5 Navigate to: \\Ntm\Banner\INB7_Bookshelf\_index7x. There is one index file for each SCT Banner product. Each index
file name includes a product abbreviation, release number, and ends with .pdx. For example, humres7x.pdx is the Human Resources, Release 7.x index file.
6 Select the index to add and click the "Open" button.
7 To add more indexes, click the "Add" button and repeat steps 6 and 7.

With the indexes prepared, you are now ready to do a search.
Steps to Conduct Advanced Search

To start a search, click the "Search" icon in the toolbar if the "Search PDF" window is not already open.

Go to "Use Advanced Search Options". (The "Use Advanced Search Options" feature lets you perform full-text searches of SCT Banner PDF document collections that have
been indexed to create SCT Banner product-specific indexes. There is one index for each product. For example, you can search all of the SCT Banner Finance
documentation-User Manual, Release Guides, handbooks, and TRM-using the Finance index. The "Use Basic Search Options" command lets you search only a single
document).

In "What word or phrase would you like to search for?" enter the word or phrase you like to search, for example, the word "sevis".

In "Look In", select "Select Index ...", then check the desired .pdx file.

In "Return results containing" and "Use these additional criteria:", choose Search options as desired.

Click the "Search" button.

The "Results" window will open showing the hits for your query.

Click on the desired file. It show each sentence containing your Search request.

Once the file opens return to the "Results" window to view other hits and open another file.
