Characteristics:
* Leaves shiny on top, thin, egg-shaped with pointy or blunt tips. Over 2 1/2".
* Twig and leaf undersides soft and hairy.
* Flowers deep red to brown, located at center of leaf cluster. Many petals, opening out from the center. Very fragrant, with a strawberry-like odor.
* Height: To 6'.

Natural History:
* Flowers April - August.
* Habitat: Mountain forests.
* Range: East coast and southeastern United States.
* Native.

Connections!
* Hairy allspice, unlike many plants, grows taller in the shade than in the sun. It grows equally well in acid and alkaline soils.
