Characteristics:
* A thin, delicate grass.
* Inflorescence hairlike, bronze to purple, on the upper part of the stem.
* Basal leaves straight and wiry, in large tufts on the ground, lasting through the winter.
* Height: 1-2 1/2'.

Natural History:
* Habitat: Sandy soil, on roadsides and in meadows, in mostly sunny areas.
* Range: Throughout the United States.
