Q: I am not a science major. Is this the right volunteering option for me?
A: Anyone can plan and help, you do not have to be a science major, just enjoy science thinking.
Q: How can I receive updates about programs? Is there a First Class conference?
A:
Yes, find us under Wellesley Conferences >> Departments >> Academic Departments >> Biological Sciences >> Science Outreach. Alternatively, e-mail Chindhuri Selvadurai, student assistant director, and she will subscribe you to the conference. This is the best way to receive the latest news and updates on Science Outreach program. Also, if you're interested in volunteering for a specific program, e-mail the program coordinator (see sidebar for descriptions) to be included in the mailing list.
Q: Do I need to apply to become a volunteer or tutor?
A: The following programs do not require an application: CSI, Plant FBI, Mission Grammar, and Girls' Day. To volunteer with Science Club for Girls and SummerBridge Academic, you must apply to the organizations themselves. See program descriptions on the sidebar for more information.
Q: What if I need information, materials, and supplies for the experiment/activities I am planning?
A: For CSI, please contact Donna Trainor, program coordinator. For SCFG and Sports Medicine contact Jocelyn Dolce and/or Connie Bauman, for summer programs please contact Christa Skow or Janet Mcdonough.
For general information, Mission Grammar programs and misc one day events please contact Janet McDonough, Science Outreach Director
Q: Can I volunteer or assist rather than design/plan activities?
A: Yes, when participating in most of the programs, you have two options. You can design the experiments, plan and lead the days' activities, in which case you must plan the curriculum and materials in advance. Secondly, you have the option to assist the student leader, in which case, you do not need to design any activities. You just need to show up 15-20 minutes before the session to be briefed.
Q: Who can I contact for programs that are not explained in further detail?
A: Please contact Chindhuri Selvadurai or specific program coordinators (see program descriptions on the sidebar) with specific questions.
Q: Do I have to make a commitment to a program for a semester before I begin?
A: No, most programs are flexible. You can volunteer once or everytime. However, once you commit for a specific date, please stick to this commitment. If you cannot make the scheduled date, contact the program director at least 24 hours in advance.
Q: How can I get to off-campus volunteering sites?
A:Three options for this: You can contact the CWS to reserve a CWS Community Service Van. CWS Vans are kept at the Campus Police, and always have a full tank of gas. You can rent a ZipCar which are also available at the Campus Police. Alternatively, you can drive your own car to the volunteering site. Students involved with the Mission Grammar program are driven to the site by Janet McDonough.
Q: How do I get access to a CWS van or ZipCar?
A: In order to drive a CWS Van, you must register with the CWS by filling out a CWS Transportation Form and provide a copy of your driver's license. In order to rent a ZipCar, there is a yearly $25 membership fee, which can be reimbursed by the CWS if you're using the car only for community service. Please see the CWS Transportation website for details.
Q: Will I be reimbursed for driving to off-campus sites with my own car and paying for gas?
A: Yes, you may drive with your own car and submit a request for reimbursement by providing a documentation of distance traveled to and from the service site. Please record your car's mileage and the date. . Students taking public transportation should submit this travelform to Jocelyn Dolce along with receipts if available. Taxi receipts are also acceptable.
