Overview: Mission Grammar School is a small inner city school located on Tremont St. in Boston. It serves students from diverse religious, ethnic, and economic backgrounds.
We have been working with Mission Grammar since 2003 providing science activities for the middle school, primarily 7th grade, class. The size and nature of the school preclude access to formal science laboratories, so our mission is to enhance the science curriculum with hands-on discovery style activities.
The topics for each lesson are very flexible. We try to design activites around one theme and in such a way that the students "discover" some scientific principle. some topics from past lesson plans include:
| Air and flight | How does the brain process visual cues? |
| The properties of water | What is the science of probability? A brief introduction |
| The immune system: How does it work? | What is topology? |
| What is soil and what conditions are most conducive to growing green plants? | Anatomy and nutrition |
