Science Club for Girls!

Science Club for Girls is a Boston-based after-school program exposing girls to science in a collaborative learning environment. For 9 weeks each fall and spring, girls spend an hour each week in an afterschool based setting engaged in hands-on science based activities.

Led by 1-2 women scientists (Wellesley College Students) and 2 Junior Assistants (middle and high school students), groups of six to ten girls make observations, test hypothesis and keep journals as biologists, chemists, and physicists, and design and build various structures as engineers. The year culminates in a science fair where our young scientists show off their new skills to friends and family.

WC volunteers are expected to commit two hours a week to the club she is assigned to lead. However, it is flexible commitment. She must be fully prepared for each week’s exploration. ALL volunteers MUST complete the mandatory Science Club for Girls Orientation before leading a club. Choose the day, time or place that works best for you! The programs operate at the following sites:

King Open School, Cambridge: Tuesdays 2:30-4:30pm
Fletcher Maynard School, Cambridge: Wednesdays 3:30-5:30pm
Cambridgeport School, Cambridge: Thursdays 2:00-4:00pm
Amigos School, Cambridge: Fridays 2:30-4:30pm
Myrtle Baptist Church, Newton: Saturdays 2:00-4:00pm
Lawrence Community Works, Lawrence: Wednesdays 2:30-4:30, 4:30-6:30pm
McCormack School, Boston: Tuesdays 2:45-5:00pm
Tobin School, Boston: Thursdays 3:30-5:30pm

Science Club for Girls works to eliminate outcome gaps in science between gender and racial/ethnic groups and brings together girls and women scientists who affirm college as an expectation and foster careers in science and technology.
