Summary:

Augusta Ada Byron, the daughter of the poet Lord Byron, was always encouraged to develop the rational aspects of her mind. Ada maintained a lifelong working relationship with Charles Babbage, a man who had created a calculation machine, the "Difference Engine". This inventor had plans for an even more complicated machine, the "Analytic engine". Ada's contribution to modern computing is found in her notes attached to a translated article about the "analytic engine" that she presented to Charles Babbage. Here she outlined the fundamental concepts of computer programming and defined the essential elements of any computer language. She retains her reputation as the first computer programmer.
