100 Word Summary:

Joseph-Marie Jacquard worked in the textile industry in 18th century France. He invented an automatic loom which used punch cards for the control of patterns and fabrics. The punch cards allowed for complex patterns to be woven more efficiency than by humans. In fact, the introduction of these looms caused the riots against the replacement of people by machines in the second half of the 18th century.

Later, however, Jacquard's invention of the punchcards , would be used to design the first calculators in technological history. His invention was pivotal not only in the industrial revolution but also the technological one.
