What is the Tanner Conference?

The Tanner Conference is a day-long event that provides a venue for students and alumnae to reflect critically upon, analyze, and share their off-campus experiences. The conference explores the learning that occurs through internships, service learning experiences, international study, experiential learning in courses, independent study, fellowships, and research. Over the course of the day, students, faculty, staff, and alumnae will be part of individual presentations, panels, and roundtable discussions.
What is the Tanner Conference Exhibition?
The Tanner Conference Exhibition is an opportunity for students to learn about the College's international study, Wintersession, and internship programs. The Exhibition will be held from 12:00 - 1:30 pm in Tishman Commons.
When is the Tanner Conference?
October 28, 2008, from 8:30 a.m. - 4:45 p.m. at Wellesley College.
What aspects of my off-campus learning experience should I emphasize in my presentation?
The purpose of the Tanner Conference is for students and alumnae to reflect critically upon, analyze, and share their off-campus experiences. The ideal presentation explores essential aspects of your off-campus learning and reflects on how your experience continues to shape your opinions, Wellesley experience, or goals. Please reference the Preparing Your Tanner Presentation for strategies on how to design your presentation.
How long should my presentation be?
That depends on how many presenters are on your panel. Each section is 70 minutes long. Therefore, if you are on a panel of 4 presenters your individual presentation time should be no longer than 15 minutes. If there are fewer than 4 on a panel, then adjust your time accordingly. However, you do not have to feel pressured to completely fill up the 70 minutes. Please leave at least ten minutes to field questions and comments from the audience.
How can I make my presentation lively and interesting?
Please refer to the Tips for Oral Presentations and Tips for Visual Aids sections of this Web site for creative presentation suggestions.
How do I transfer my Powerpoint presentation to the computer that I will be using at the conference?
You may store your presentation on a USB drive (thumb drive), the campus network's 24-hour drop, or as an attachment to your FirstClass account. As a backup, we recommend that you save your presentation in multiple formats to guarantee access on the day of the conference. In addition, be sure that your presentation works on the computer in your assigned room prior to the day of your presentation.
How should I dress?
Business casual.
How can I control my nervousness?
Practice several times, at least once in front of a friend, roommate, or even a mirror. We recommend practicing in your assigned room with your advisor and co-presenters before the Tanner Conference. The Pforzheimer Learning and Teaching Center (PLTC) holds a workshop the week before the conference on presentation skills specifically designed to aid Tanner participants with their public speaking. We highly recommend your attending.
