Targeting Potential Employers: Job Search Strategies
An effective job search requires you to take initiative. Strategize.
Identify the industry or organization in which you would like
to work and the position you would like to fill. There are a
number of ways to identify prospective employers, including:
- Building a Career in NFP/Public Service
- Not-for-Profit Networking
Fairs
Students and alumnae can learn about internship and employment
opportunities through the not-for-profit networking fair held
on campus in the spring. Each year the CWS also co-sponsors
Not-for-Profit Fairs in New York City and Washington, D.C.
- Other internet job search sites:
a listing of a few of the many job sites available on the internet. CWS Library online resources including CareerSearch, Vault, GoingGlobal offer extensive information about potential employers, regions, industries and salaries.
- monsterTRAK: Internet
Job Bulletin
CWS job listings are found on monsterTRAK, a national job listing database. Alumnae may access monsterTRAK using a password, which
may be obtained by calling the Center for Work and Service at
781.283.2352. The password changes annually in June.
- Directly Contacting an Employer
CareerSearch is an excellent online tool for researching and locating employers.
- Establishing and Mobilizing Your
Network
- Help-Wanted Advertisements
Classified advertisements can be useful to get a sense of the
employment market and job descriptions, in addition to being
a source for job openings. Estimates of the number of jobs filled
through want ads range from 15% to 25%--allocate your time accordingly.
