Museum Work/Administration


The Arts Insider Report. Ivey Productions, Inc., 1999. Chapter One introduces the reader to the world of art, arts organizations, the culture and trends of the arts industry. Chapter Two discusses the traits and skills, coursework, and internship experiences of benefit to entry-level employees. Chapter Three describes entry-level positions, the pros and cons, and career tracks of arts professionals. Other chapters include job search tips: the resume, the portfolio, interviewing and resources for finding job openings. Fourteen arts organizations are profiled with statistics on yearly new hires, professional advancement and salaries, along with descriptions of entry-level jobs, suggestions for interviewing with the organization, and a contact person.

Graduate Training in Museum Studies. Marjorie Schwarzer. American Assn. of Museums, 2001. The author presents information on the field of museum studies, getting started, and researching graduate programs.

Museums and Galleries of New York City. Insight Guides, 2002. This directory profiles 79 New York City museums and art galleries and includes photos of major art works on display.

National Directory of Arts Internships. National Network for Artist Placement, 2001. Lists agencies offering internships in various arts categories. Entries include intern's duties, requirements, applications procedures, and a contact name.

NEMA News: Jobs. New England Museum Assn., bimonthly. Job listings for the New England museums.

The Official Museum Directory. R.R. Bowker, 2003. Produced by the American Association of Museums, the directory lists, aquariums, art museums, historic museums, planetariums, science museums and zoos. Entries include address, phone, names of personnel, number of employees, information on collections and activities, attendance statistics, etc.

Performing Arts/Entertainment


Acting for Film. Cathy Haase. Allworth Press, 2003. The author presents information on what it takes to be successful in acting in film including suggestions on physical presentation, how to audition and read the script, and what to expect in rehearsals. She also describes types of films (big-budget, low budget) the first day on a set, camera setups, and rushes.

Agents and Managers. LA 411 Publishing, 2001. Directory lists companies and individuals involved with the entertainment industry: talent agents, literary agents, casting agents, agents involved with commercials production, performing arts management, individual television shows, etc. Entries include address, phone and fax numbers, names of key personnel, number of clients, and names of noted clients.

Careers in Focus: Performing Arts. Ferguson Publishing Co., 2002. The reader is introduced to a variety of possible careers in the performing arts. Entries for each include a history, job description, requirements, types of employers, beginning a career, advancement, earnings, work environment, outlook, and sources of further information.

Music & Entertainment Industry Internship Guide. Entertainment Media Consultants, 2002. Directory lists internships offered in the performing arts, broadcast media, literary arts, and other arts- and entertainment-related organizations. Entries include address, phone and fax numbers, and requirements.

100 Careers in the Music Business. Tanja L. Crouch. Barron's Educational Series, Inc., 2001. The author describes careers within industries related to music: composing/songwriting, recording, management, professional and creative services, marketing/publicity, agent/touring staff, film/television, event planning, and professional organizations. Appendices include listing of unions, organizations, publications, directories, undergraduate music schools, and arts management programs.

Opportunities in Performing Arts Careers. Bonnie Bjorguine Bekken. VGM Career Books, 2001. The author presents an overview of performers and discusses the various fields of music (opera, jazz, singing, etc.), dance, the theater, film and television. Also included is information on auditions, resumes, and current trends.

Summer Theatre Directory. Theatre Directories, 2000. Includes an introduction to summer theater. Entries list address, description, number of people hired, equity status, and a contact name. "Tips on Finding the Right Summer Theater," and "Tips on Preparing for Combined Auditions" contain valuable information for the person seeking employment and/or experience in theater.

U.S. Directory of Entertainment Employers. Sandlot Publishing, 2002. Directory lists addresses of agents, studios, broadcast stations, entertainment lawyers, theaters, and other organizations involved in the entertainment industry.

Visual Arts/Design


American Style. Subscription, quarterly. Journal contains articles pertaining to the crafts industry in the U.S.

An Artist's Guide to Making It in New York City. Daniel Grant. Allworth Press, 2001. The author presents information for the fine artist seeking to establish a base in New York City. This includes finding affordable studio space, displaying and exhibiting work, interacting with art dealers, acquiring financial support, finding an art-related job, and applying for grants.

Arts Career Resources. Wellesley College, 2001. Kate Heider has compiled a variety of materials to help students find jobs in the arts. These include arts jobs bulletins, Web sites listing arts jobs, individual opportunities at museums and other arts organizations, studio arts sites and publications, grants, graduate school information etc.

Becoming a Graphic Designer. Steven Heller and Teresa Fernandes. John Wiley & Sons, Inc. 2002. The authors describe design specialties (book, advertising, corporate, etc.), types of designers (freelance, studio, large firms, etc.) and design education opportunities.

Careers for Fashion Plates & Other Trendsetters. Lucia Mauro. VGM Career Horizons, 2003. The author presents career information and descriptions for accessory design, arts design and costuming, retailing and wholesale, fashion writing and photography, education, and modeling. Appendices include a list of modeling agencies and bibliography.

Careers in Art: an Illustrated Guide. Gerald F. Brommer and Joseph A. Gatto. Davis Publications, 1999. The authors discuss preparation for a career in the visual arts, including education, the job search, portfolios, and the job market. Descriptions of jobs include those in environmental design, communications and entertainment, product and fashion design, crafts and fine arts, and education.


Careers in Focus: Design. Ferguson Publishing Group, 2002. Career information book explores a wide variety of careers in the field of design, from architecture to software design, in terms of the nature of the work, educational or training requirements, advancement, salary, and employment outlook.

Careers in Graphic Arts and Computer Graphics. Erin McGuire-Lytle. Rosen Publishing Group, Inc., 1999. The author defines the elements of graphic design and describes careers in graphic design and computer graphics including artist, art director, freelance work, and work in advertising and illustration. Also included are chapters on career preparation and the job search. Appendices list art schools offering graphic design and organizations related to the field.

Opportunities in Architectural Careers. Robert Piper (Revised by Richard D. Rush). VGM Career Horizons, 2001. The author describes careers in commercial illustration, advertising art direction, graphic design, publishing, broadcasting, fashion, film, computer graphics, etc.

Opportunities in Photography Careers. Bervin Johnson. VGM Career Horizons, 1999. The author presents a brief history of the field of photography, educational opportunities, and describes the various specialties (commercial, portrait, industrial, technical, photojournalism, etc.). Appendices list publications, associations and schools.

Professional Degree Programs in the Visual and Performing Arts. Peterson's, 2001. Descriptions of educational programs in music, fine arts, theatre, and dance include degrees conferred, faculty and student statistics, costs, application instructions, and a contact person.

ProFile. American Institute of Architects, 2002. Directory of U.S. architecture firms includes statistical information on number of personnel employed (by job title) and percentages of time spent on types of projects.

Surviving as an Artist after College. Wellesley College Art Dept., Dec. 2, 2000. Book is a compilation of articles and worksheets from various sources presented to students attending a workshop on surviving as an artist after graduation.
