The author presents a 13-step approach to writing a resume: identifying job qualifications, compiling evidence of skills, organization, summarization of strongest skills, emphasizing education, describing achievements and experience, "extras," formatting, cross-checking, proofreading, online presentation, and networking. Also included are worksheets and a section on job search letters. The second part of the book presents a wide variety of sample resumes.

The authors discuss the job market and provide information on the various components of a resume: identifying goals and values, formatting and layout, education, job experience, etc. Also included is information for specific populations: recent college graduates, career changers, and those with a "problem job history." This most widely known job search book includes chapters on rejection, job hunting approaches, the Internet job search, identifying values and skills relating them to the workplace, and finding the right contact person within an organization.
