Summer 2009

Purpose

The Emily Cohen MacFarquhar '59 Internship for International Journalism has been established to encourage and support Wellesley College students with a demonstrated interest in journalism or photojournalism. This stipend will provide the recipients with the opportunity to learn about journalism through an internship at an international news organization and to travel in order to document a foreign culture outside of the U.S.
(Note: This internship does not apply to creative writing.)

Eligibility

All currently enrolled Wellesley College sophomores, juniors, and seniors in good academic standing are eligible. The award seeks to fund recipients to perform full-time summer internships only. Applicants may not be recipients of funding from other sources for the period covered by the stipend.

Students may submit one of two different types of proposals for the funding through the Emily Cohen MacFarquhar ’59 Internship for International Journalism Program:
  1. Create their own internship at an international news organization;
  2. Develop a travel plan in order to document a culture that is entirely new to them.

Selection Criteria and Application Process

Interns will be chosen on the basis of their demonstrated knowledge of the region and current affairs, their academic background, and demonstrated interest in journalism.

Interview

The selection committee will interview finalists for the Emily Cohen MacFarquhar ’59 Internship for International Journalism Program. When necessary, telephone interviews will be arranged for students studying abroad. Students selected for an interview will be notified by the beginning of April and interviews will be conducted in mid-April.

Application Requirements:
Complete the Emily Cohen Farquhar ’59 Internship for International Journalism Program Application Form and include:
  • a current resume
  • a current transcript (may be unofficial)
  • one reference; click here for instructions.

All completed application materials, plus six copies, must be handed in by the deadline date and time.

Participant Requirements

In the spring before their internships, award recipients must attend a mandatory meeting where they will sign a contract agreeing to complete 350 hours of work over an 8-10 week internship during the summer at their internship placements.

By September 11, 2009 after The Emily Cohen MacFarquhar '59 Internship for International Journalism experience, students will be required to:
  • submit a 3-5 page essay that reflects on the internship or travel experience;
  • submit the completed learning contract and supervisor evaluation;
  • write a thank you note to the donor of the stipend.

Students are strongly encouraged to participate in the Tanner Conference, a one-day conference held each fall that celebrates the incorporation of students' off-campus learning experiences into their education. The conference will provide a venue for students to reflect critically upon, analyze, and share their off-campus experiences with others in the college community through panel presentations, roundtables, and information sessions.

Stipend

Up to two stipends will be awarded annually in the amount of $3,500; additional funds to cover airfare and housing will be awarded.

The stipend will be distributed in two installments. The initial installment will be given in May after all required contracts have been signed and returned to the Center for Work and Service. This initial installment will be $500 less than the award amount listed for the program. The remaining $500 will be given to the recipient after the Center for Work and Service has received a copy of her thank you letter to the donor, her essay, and the other follow-up materials required by the stipend.
