CWS Summer Stipend Program
2007-2008
Overview
The generosity of Wellesley alumnae, parents, friends, and grantors has made possible the CWS Summer Stipend Program that supports Wellesley sophomores, juniors, and seniors in unpaid internships in not-for-profit and public service organizations, as well as in some for-profit organizations.
Nearly all of the 200 stipends available through the CWS Summer Stipend Program support students who identify their own internship. In addition, there are six named programs (Emily Cohen MacFarquhar '59 Internship for International Journalism, Low Vision Center, The Paul B. Beal and Mona Phillips Beal Internship, Social Accountability International, SoundWaters, and Wellesley Words on Wheels), each offering one placement.
Students may submit up to two applications to the CWS Summer Stipend Program for two different internships they have found on their own. They may also submit an application to each of the six named programs, should they so desire. Please see the Wellesley College Supported Internships chart for more information.
Students are only allowed to receive one CWS stipend during their four years at Wellesley College, and one funded internship experience from the college each academic year. A stipend and a funded internship opportunity may not be undertaken simultaneously. Stipend applications will be read and ranked by faculty members. Priority will be given to juniors over sophomores. If there are more sophomores who are equally ranked than there are stipends, a lottery for the available funding will be held. With all other things being equal, preference is given to students who state financial need, who have not previously received a stipend, and who are working in an unpaid position.
Most stipends are $3,500 each. Funded internships require the stipend recipient to complete a 10-week, 350 hour internship during the summer. Award decisions are merit-based and committees are not required to disburse all available funds.
Information meetings will be held at 12:30 p.m. on the following days*:
