CWS Summer Internship and Stipend Program
Information for Host Organizations

The Wellesley College Center for Work and Service (CWS) awards stipends to Wellesley College students who work at unpaid summer internships related to their career and/or academic interests or community service. Students must work for a total of 350 hours over 8-10 weeks. Wellesley is committed to providing substantive experiential learning opportunities for its students while ensuring that students contribute in significant ways to the mission and needs of the organization hosting them. Toward this end, we have expectations for our students and their internship site during the summer.

Host organization's responsibilities:

To ensure a substantive learning opportunity and the intern's safety, the college expects the host organization to:
  • provide job/project orientation at the start of the internship;
  • assign a mentor/supervisor who will meet with the intern on a regular basis to supervise her assignments and answer any work-related questions that arise;
  • assign the intern substantive projects, in addition to day-to-day duties, so that she may contribute to the overall mission and needs of the organization;
  • complete the Mid-Summer Evaluation. The Mid-Summer Evaluation is an opportunity to determine the progress the student is making on her learning and development and to determine new directions for the remainder of the internship;
  • complete the Final Supervisor Evaluation at the end of student's internship;
  • provide a basic safety orientation for living and traveling in the host city (especially if the student is not a resident of or has never been to the host city);
  • assist the intern in locating a proper medical facility if the need arises and, if necessary, help her make arrangements to return home, in consultation with the Wellesley College Center for Work and Service (the host organization will not incur any costs).

Internship preparation requirements for all students: In April, students attended a Pre-Departure Orientation to prepare for their summer internship. During this orientation, students were provided with information on expectations for and responsibilities of interns, health and safety concerns, culture and etiquette issues, and safety resources and procedures the college has in place in case of emergency. This information may be viewed on the CWS Web site at: http://www.wellesley.edu/cws/students/introinthandbook.html.

For students completing international internships:
The college confirms that the students have valid passports and visas, if required. In addition, the college provides medical evacuation insurance in case of medical emergency.
