Targeting Potential Employers: Job Search Strategies

An effective job search requires you to take initiative. Strategize. Identify the industry or organization in which you would like to work and the position you would like to fill. There are a number of ways to identify prospective employers, including:

  • Building a Career in NFP/Public Service
  • MyCWS: Students and alumnae can register with MyCWS to search job, internship, fellowship and volunteer opportunities and the access the Research Library containing CLOE (Career and Life Online Exploration) with resources including: CareerSearch, Vault, GoingGlobal -- offering information about potential employers, regions, industries and salaries.
  • Not-for-Profit Networking Fairs: Students and alumnae can learn about internship and employment opportunities through the not-for-profit networking fair held on campus in the spring. Each year the CWS also co-sponsors Not-for-Profit Fairs in New York City and Washington, D.C.
  • The Wellesley Women in Science Job and Internship Fair
  • CWS Recruiting Program: Seniors may take advantage of an employment recruiting program in which over 150 companies participate. On-campus recruiting can produce excellent job opportunities; however, recruiters represent only a tiny segment of the job market. It is wise to conduct an independent job search concurrently with your participation in the recruiting program. Participation in the recruiting program requires attendance at a mandatory meeting in the fall.
  • CWS recommended job search sites
  • Establishing and Mobilizing Your Network
  • Directly Contacting an Employer
  • Help Wanted Advertisements: You will want to devote only a small amount of your time responding to ads. Estimates of the number of jobs filled through want ads range from 15% to 25%.
