Safety Recommendations for Students Performing Domestic Service Projects
Remember to distribute your Emergency Information Sheet to your family/emergency contact and carry a copy with you at all times.
Students pursuing a service project in the United States are advised to conduct research on the city or town in which the project is located, paying particular attention to visitor services and safety and crime statistics. This information can often be found on the official Web site of the city or town or on the Web site of the area police department. Staff members at the internship site may also be able to provide this information.
Once you have arrived at your project location:
- inform someone of your whereabouts at all times;
- carry the Emergency Information Sheet with you as well as the numbers for police, fire, local doctors and hospitals, etc.;
- keep cash on hand;
- maintain contact with your family and friends and keep them updated on your whereabouts;
- if possible, carry a cell phone that you know will work in the area(s) of your internship.
