Goals and Requirements

A) The program strives to provide students with:
  • a valuable work experience in a community service setting;
  • greater exposure to community service as a career opportunity;
  • development of professional work ethics and responsibilities;
  • an in-depth understanding of and appreciation for the existence of community service organizations.
B) The program strives to provide placement organizations with:

  • a mature and committed part-time staff member;
  • a student engaged in supervised learning exercises designed to complement her "on-the-job" learning experience;
  • an additional human resource that can bring energy, ideas, creativity and a variety of skills to the organization;
  • an opportunity to introduce and encourage longer-term volunteer and career involvement in community service work.

Salary

Student participants are paid by contributions from the Federal Work Study Program (75%) and the community service placement organization (25%). All Federal Work Study/Community Service Program placements are paid $9.00 per hour and students average 10-12 hours of work per week.

The placement organization will receive a bill from Wellesley College at the end of each semester based on the hours submitted by the student on her timecards. Organizations can anticipate a one year contribution cost to range from $680 to $816. If the organization is unable to pay the 25% due to financial restrictions, or if they are a public school or not-for-profit educational program, they may be exempt from paying the 25%.

Please contact Melissa Hawkins, 781.283.2357, to see if funds are available in these situations.
