ROOFIES: THE DATE-RAPE DRUG
 
*There have been reported cases of date rape involving roofies in the Boston
        area.  This summer, roofies were confiscated in Newton when a woman
        remembered enough to report a Newton man.
 
SOME INFORMATION:
 
Roofies:
Rohypnol, Mexican Valium, Rib, Rope, Roach, Roches
        -illegal in the US, but easily attainable
        -odorless, tasteless, clear in liquid, often dissolves in alcohol
        -dissolves in 10 minutes, sedation and possible loss of consciousness
         occurs 25-30 minutes afterward
        -causes extreme feeling of drunkeness for 8 hours, effects wear off in
         24 hours
        -roofies disappear from system in 48 hours
 
What to look for:
        -Amnesia: woman will have no memory of her sedation under roofies
        -slurring words
        -difficulty walking
        -shallow breathing and possible respiratory arrest
 
Be SURE to:
        -Be careful from whom you accept an open drink or food
        -Only drink out of unopened cans
