Solubility of Substances

PurposeGain experience working with chemicals and glassware. Practice making observations.Learn about reactions and solubility. You will explore the solubility of one solvent in another as well as different solutes in various solvents.

Background:

Solvents are substances that can dissolve other materials in them. A common solvent is water. Solutes are the materials that dissolve in a solvent. When a material dissolves in a solvent, we say that the material is soluble. If a solvent can not dissolve a material, we say the material is insoluble.

You will be testing a series of liquids and solids to see which react,, which disolve and which react.

Experimental:

Mix several mL of each of the liquids with a few mL of the remaining s liquids, each in a separate test tube and record the results.

Next, mix a small amount of each solid with about a few mL of each of the liquids. Record your results.

Data analysis:

From the data can you determine which liquids are solvents for the other liquids?

Which liquids are solvents for which solids?

Assuming water is polar, can you determine which other liquids and solids are polar?

Explain your answers and use specific examples from your data to support all of your answers to the questions above.
