About the time I started teaching at Wellesley, I began collecting Quaker books and pamphlets. This collection has expanded to include many early (17th and 18th century) manuscripts and includes approximately 8,000 titles. One of my most exciting recent manuscript finds is a collection of the school records from a Quaker school outside Baltimore from 1810. It is clear from these records that this school was not only coeducational, but also racially integrated. I also recently found a collection of broadsides published in 1660 which were written in response to the hanging of Mary Dyer on the Boston Common. The title of one of these broadsides, "To New England's Pretended Christians", is indicative of the furor caused by these religious persecutions. Because of my interest in Quaker history, I have served as the presiding clerk of the Archives and Historical Records Committee of the New England Yearly Meeting of Friends (Quakers). I also enjoy music, photography, and gardening, when I get the chance. Nancy (my wife) owns and runs Vintage Books, a used and antiquarian bookstore in Hopkinton, Massachusetts. The store has about 20,000 books, dating from as early as the 16th century and specializes in American history, women's history and writings, and early American religion. We also have an carry extensive stock of books by and about Quakers and issue a Quakeriana catalog annually.
