Teaching Experience
1981 - dateNational Cancer Institute, Laboratory of Medicinal Chemistry IPA Visiting Scholar - 1985-86
Teaching Interests and Activities As an organic chemist at a college with a large enrollment in Organic Chemistry, I have found myself teaching mostly Organic in recent years. This has included both semesters of the year-long Organic Chemistry sequence, and, occasionally an advanced seminar in Medicinal Chemistry. I have, when enrollments have permitted it, also taught Introductory Chemistry (111, 113, 114, and 115). Nick Doe and I recently presented a poster, at the 2001 ACS meeting in Chicago, on an experiment that we developed for the first semester of Organic Chemistry laboratory. This experiment was designed to give students an experimental understanding of the relationships of SN2, SN1, and Elimination reactions. I have linked the abstract for our presentation to this page.
Because I believe that one of the best ways to learn material is through discussion of ideas with peers, I helped start and have coordinated the Chemistry Department Resource Room for several years. This room is open five nights a week, and staffed by upperclass students who have demonstrated both a good understanding of chemistry and the ability to explain ideas to their peers. |
