Data
Overview: The College efforts to clean up the site of the former Henry Wood's Sons paint factory have included extensive analysis of soil and water samples collected at the site and at other locations on the Wellesley campus. Portions of the analytical data obtained from over 6,000 samples, tabulated in Microsoft Excel (version 98), along with a brief description of their contents, can be accessed from this site for in-depth studies.
Water. Groundwater and surface water has been monitored since 1983 and the results of analytical results may be accessed through this site. Although the concentrations of total and hexavalent chromium and lead, in some cases, exceed the EPA drinking water standards (>Maximum Contaminant Level, MCL) in some monitoring wells, none of the contaminated water is used for drinking. The data from wells in which chromium and lead levels exceed the MCL's have been plotted to make these data more accessible. The levels of these species (and many other water-quality indicating species) in the well field supplying Wellesley College drinking water (Table 1, January 31, 1996 ) and that of adjacent towns (February 28, 1996, Table 2.1) have also been extensively monitored.
All of the monitoring wells are listed below.
Wells in purple have Cr levels greater than the MCL of 0.1 ppm (part per million)
Wells in light blue have CN (Cyanide) levels greater than the MCL of 0.2 ppm
Wells in orange have Pb (lead) levels which are greater than the MCL of 15 ppb (parts per billion) or 0.015 ppm
